Criminal Justice Portrayal in Film and TV
The course will be a study of the portrayal of the criminal justice, law enforcement and criminal world in film and tv including news media. Subjects covered will be the stereotypes of certain races and ethnic groups. The high proportion of characters involved in these areas compared to real life. The social and political statements implied in crime based entertainment and the unrealistic portrayal of police and military agencies.
Gender and Society
This course seeks to examine how people experience gender – what it means to be a man or a woman – and sexuality in a variety of historical and cultural contexts. We will explore how gender and sexuality relate to other categories of social identity and difference, such as race and ethnicity, economic and social standing, urban or rural life, etc
Language and Culture
Through a series of videos, power point presentations, discussion blogs, and vblogs, this course provides a comprehensive overview of various features concerning English-speaking cultures while also exploring historical roots, political developments, and international influences.
Language and Mythology
This course encompasses an introductory knowledge on the definitions and nature of mythology and how language has evolved through the myths.
Aside from providing the students a background knowledge of the different myths of various countries, the course aims to equip students with the skills necessary to become critical readers and competent users of English language, specifically vocabulary, in speaking and writing.
Morality through Fiction (Heroes and Villains)
The aim of this course will be look at the certain characters across movies, TV and literature (novels and comics). The course will follow a structure that consists of three sections (Heroes, Villains & Anti-Heroes). The factors that affect the morality of each character will be discussed within each section. This will help the students understand what factors affect the morality of an individual. Factors that will be examined include: Age, gender, ethnicity, history (family background), intellect, wealth, perspective/view of the world etc
This course will provide the learners a better understanding of the science of happiness and positive psychology and how it can influence health and well-being. It will delve into the theoretical principles and historical antecedents of the discipline. Topics include the nature of happiness, gratitude, resilience, kindness and compassion. More importantly, it offers practical applications that learners can utilize in nurturing their own sense of happiness and well-being in order for them to lead meaningful lives.
