Film and Genre Studies

In this class we focus strongly on improving student’s abilities to support their own ideas using evidence from the in‐class texts. We focus on using English to state an idea, and how to formulate evidence to make that idea a well‐supported and logical conclusion to reach from the film watched. Specifically, we look at what the ‘message’ of a film is to each individual student, and examine ways of using both film and narrative techniques (such as, character, dialogue, setting, and key themes) to make arguments supporting the student’s own ideas and understandings

Introduction to British and American Children’s Literature

Our first encounters with literature take place in childhood, a time filled with stories that range from songs, fairy tales, and bedtime stories to novels of fantasy, science fiction, and adventure. As children, the stories we hear become the life around us and help us learn our cultural and social norms. This influence is true of any language and culture but is especially true of English because it unites the wide-ranging English-speaking countries throughout the world.
